Job summary This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated, skilled, and capable Head of Improvement to be embedded in the Private Offices of the NHS Chief Executive (CEO), Chief Finance Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO). This is a rich and varied role working across a wide range of programme areas and priorities to provide high-quality analytical support to the Private Office and involving close working with Senior Leadership and Ministers with a key focus on Urgent & Emergency Care Improvement. Main duties of the job The Head of Improvement role is key to ensuring the analytical needs of the CEO/COO/CFO Private Office are met, principally: To support Urgent & Emergency Care improvement , by ensuring CEO, CFO and COO have data and analytics they require to understand both UEC performance and wider NHS performance that impacts on the UEC pathways. To support ad hoc requests , either undertaking the work or working as air traffic control to intelligently translate, commission, direct, and support the work. These are not all simple data requests; they require an ability to interrogate the data and create an accurate narrative of what is happening and why, which can be used publicly when required. To improve our cross-cutting approach to operational information , such as ensuring dashboards meet the immediate day-to-day needs of CEO, CFO and COO; that they receive operational performance insights tailored to their requirements; and help to develop our organisational approach to light-touch evaluation. Job responsibilities Please see the attached JD but as a flavour of responsibilities, the Head of Improvement you will: Ensure materials for cross-government meetings, press releases, etc. have undergone the correct fact-checking and support the strategic interest of the organisation. Lead and orchestrate analytical projects. For example, commissioning and guiding analytical teams to respond to analytical requests from the private office. Forge and maintain strong links between the private office and analytical teams. For example, acting as a lead on day-to-day work including the performance overview dashboard. Work with external organisations on their data and analytical commissions. For example, working with civil service departments on data access requirements. Take a forward look to support analytical insights that the CEO, CFO and COO will need in 6-12 months' time. Utilise a variety and depth of analytical techniques to provide quality, timely analysis and intelligence relating to key priorities of NHS England. Lead and suggest analytical solutions to problems, to analyse and triangulate data in innovative ways and ensure findings are presented clearly to a range of audiences. Person Specification Education / Training / Qualifications Educated to Master's level or equivalent level or equivalent experience of working at a senior level relevant to urgent and emergency care. Skills High level analytical skills and the ability to draw qualitative and quantitative data from a wide range of sources and present it in a clear concise manner. Ability to think strategically and analyse complex problems and interact in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment. Confident in the use of information technology and data interpretation, including SPC (statistical process control). Ability to work on own initiative and organise workload, allocating work as necessary, working to tight and often changing deadlines. Experience Track record of building sustainable relationships with senior NHS leaders and clinicians; expert negotiator, facilitator and mediator, with experience of applying these skills with senior/executive audiences. Knowledge Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy and appreciate the implications of this on engagement.
