Principal Consultant and Team Leader to lead the Cambridge team within RSK Geosciences based in offices near
Boxworth, Cambridgeshire. We are a market-leading specialist Geo-environmental Consultancy practice and been involved in many high profile and award-winning projects, both nationally and locally in the East of England.
You will manage a team of motivated and enthusiastic geo-environmental and geotechnical specialists; get involved with a wide variety of geo-environmental and geotechnical projects including ground investigations in relation to most industry sectors including commercial and residential development, energy infrastructure, logistics and healthcare.
What you can expect in this position:As a Team leader you will be expected to support in the delivery of geo-environmental and geotechnical projects and will therefore be able to demonstrate strong technical, commercial and project management capabilities. It is expected that employees working at this grade will be proficient with managing projects and team finance, be client facing, self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach, and work well within a team environment as well as in isolation.
A Team Leader is responsible for managing, mentoring, developing and overseeing a team of people, as well as being a project and technical lead for a range of projects undertaken both within their team and across the wider RSK Geosciences business.
The role requires the individual to adhere to, and promote the values of RSK across the team.
All Project work either carried out by the individual, or overseen, must be undertaken with due diligence, adhered to by the RSK procedures & completed within the given cost budgets and time scales agreed. Good communication skills are essential for this role to inform/liaise with the both the team and the client periodically with updates & any issues raised.
It is expected that the Team Leader should have already developed their leadership skills, have a wide industry awareness, be client facing, have a strong project financial focus, be self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach, and work well within a team environment.
Responsibilities: - Supporting junior staff undertaking geo-environmental and geotechnical projects through PRA and ground investigation phases, including the production of high-quality interpretive reports, adhering to RSK procedures
- Design of ground investigation works and projects in the above sectors
- Technical review of geo-environmental Phase 1 & 2 reports and associated documents
- Mentoring and training junior staff
- Project lead for larger complex sites providing geo-environmental technical and project management support to junior staff. This will include a range of sites from simple ground investigations through to large complex multi-disciplinary brownfield strategic developments on former industrial installations
- Manage projects to meet both commercial and technical requirements and working with technical and projects leads to deliver appropriate solutions
- Effectively communicating with clients (both external and within the wider RSK Group) and colleagues to build strong working relationships with the aim of meeting and exceeding client expectations, and contributing to a strong team ethic
- Stewardship of health, safety and environment in accordance with company standards and contribute to sustainability goals
- Supporting business development through managing the preparation of tenders
- Undertake appraisals annually for your team and use the results when assigning work tasks
- Monitor workload for your team and be proactive in communicating the need to actively increase sales with the Regional Director
- Review of project safety risk assessments, method statements and HASPs
- Clear communication of SHEQ matters
- Develop your team as appropriate to their skill set and the workload
- Undertake business development with support, to generate new opportunities
- Promoting RSK Geosciences to your existing contacts and identifying potential new leads
Qualifications and Experience: - Practical experience in designing, supervising and managing ground investigations for geo-environmental and/ or geotechnical assessments on a wide range of sites
- Experienced project manager in an environmental/ engineering consultancy environment
- Geo-environmental experience on a wide range of projects from small to large scale.
- Some experience in larger brownfield regeneration sites would be preferable.
- Geotechnical and earthworks experience would be advantageous.
- Ability to undertake technical and commercial review of geo-environmental reports produced by junior members of the team
- Proven experience of preparing tenders and fee proposals
- Confident with business development and approaching new people whether it be at an organised event or on a one on one basis.
- A good existing local network of contacts would be an advantage
- Comfortable with multi-disciplinary projects and a general understanding of related disciplines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical report writing
- Detailed understanding of UK contaminated land and planning legislation
- Ability to multi-task, plan and prioritise own and others workload
- Client-driven with the ability to motivate and engage with immediate colleagues and those across the wider RSK business
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Computer literate and skilled with Microsoft Office applications, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience of use of Microsoft Project also valuable.

- An understanding of contracts / forms of contract used for ground investigations in the UK
- Full UK driving licence
- BSc degree level qualified in Geology, Chemistry, Civil Engineering or a related subject
- MSc in Land contamination/ hydrogeology or Engineering Geology/Geotechnical Engineering or Contaminated Land preferable but not essential
- Chartered Geologist, Scientist or Engineer with a relevant professional body, applicants working towards Chartered status may be considered.
- At least 10+ years relevant industry experience
