Job DescriptionNuclear Engineering Technician Higher Apprenticeship Starting salary: £18,638 per year
Locations: Derby
Duration: 4 years
Our Nuclear Engineering Technician Higher Apprenticeship will give you the skills, qualifications and experience needed to help us design, make, verify, and support the operation of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plants (NSRP), providing power to all of the UK Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet. It's a chance to get real work experience and earn a salary, while studying for a HNC in Engineering.
Nuclear power is incredible - just one spoonful of uranium is all it takes to power a fully-submerged submarine on a full circumnavigation of the world and the entire fleet can operate for over 20 years without needing to be refuelled, thanks to our revolutionary technology.
Join us and you can expect outstanding career support from day one, debt-free qualifications, and the chance to build an amazing career in a friendly, supportive environment where you can be yourself and be your best.
What you'll doSpend four years with our expert team as part of our Nuclear Skills Academy and you'll gain the sort of practical knowledge you simply can't develop in the classroom. You'll gain a firm foundation in engineering principles via practical workshop experience in year one and start your HNC in Engineering which will continue across year two. You'll experience the full breadth of nuclear engineering as you take on a variety of placements across the engineering lifecycle and in different parts of the business in years two, three and four.
This could include product and system design, testing, manufacture, and in-service support in a mix of day to day and project work. The combination of on-the-job training on real-life projects alongside your studies will equip you to complete your apprenticeship as an engineering technician with a huge range of opportunities ahead of you.
What you'll need- Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above which must include Maths, English Language and Science (triple, double award, physics or chemistry)
- 64 UCAS points (obtained or predicted) from either:
- Maximum 3 A-levels and must include Maths or Physics at grade C
- An Engineering related Level 3 BTEC
- A T Level in an Engineering and Manufacturing discipline
If points are coming from a mixture of BTEC and A Levels then the UCAS points must equal a minimum of 64 points and must include as a minimum, an A Level in Maths or Physics at a grade C. There can be any choice of BTEC to make up the points.
We're looking for individuals who are purpose-driven and passionate about delivering on commitments. People who are keen to learn about nuclear engineering and how the engineering lifecycle comes together to deliver a world class product. You'll be a logical and analytical thinker - someone with a common-sense approach when it comes to working with data and coming up with solutions to challenges. You'll also be a team player who's able to demonstrate their achievements outside school or college.
Our behaviours drive us - we put safety first, do the right thing, keep it simple and make a difference. We'll expect that of you, too.
