Top Green Skills Employers are Looking for Right Now

By Rayne Morgan Published on April 4

The biggest employers in the world have their eyes set on hiring people who have green skills. Even major job board LinkedIn has reported on it. But just the term “green skills” by itself casts a wide net. How is someone to know what kind of green skills they should be looking at if they want to build a successful career in the green economy?

In our last article, we looked at what “green skills” mean. In this article, we’ll tell you some of the biggest green skills employers are looking for right now and what they entail.

Three of the Most Common Green Skills

  1. Renewable Energy
  2. Environmental Law and Policy
  3. Management

What are Renewable Energy Skills?

Renewable energy skills refer to having advanced theoretical knowledge of how renewable energy works in multiple forms, as well as technical skills with using renewable energy tools and technology.

With the solar power and wind turbine industries set to take off in the United States and become among the highest-paid, it’s no surprise that hundreds of employers want people with skills in the renewable energy field.

Renewable energy skills often overlap with other areas of expertise, such as engineering and environmental science.

What are Environmental Law and Policy Skills?

Environmental law and environmental policy skills refer to specialized knowledge of laws, policies, and practices related to environmental science, as well as close familiarity with how those laws can apply in a wide variety of scenarios.

Although a lot of green skills are hands-on, many are more focused on brain power, highly specific subject-matter knowledge, and legal competency.

Just as a wind turbine plant needs technicians on the ground handling equipment, private businesses and even governments need experts in a more corporate role to oversee compliance, policy design, and similar matters.

What are Environmental Management Skills?

Environmental management is a specific skill set that requires an advanced level of technical expertise, knowledge, and competency in effectively managing matters related to sustainability and the environment.

An environmental management skill set can be wide-ranging, including anything from overseeing a renewable energy plant to overseeing the architectural design of an upscale new environmentally-friendly building — and many other applications in between and beyond. It’s no wonder it’s such a valuable skill to have!

You also don’t necessarily have to have 20 years of experience before you can acquire environmental management skills either, although that certainly helps. There are college programs for this field in particular, so you can get a direct pathway if this is what you’re interested in.
